PADI ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR COURSE – 5 days
This course is designed for PADI Divemasters (or any qualifying certification from another training organizations) who would like to expand their knowledge, skills and duties as a more valuable instructional assistant and assume limited teaching responsibilities. It’s a great way to gain experience in order to become a PADI Scuba Instructor!
During the program, you’ll gain additional experience while continuing to learn the PADI System of Diver Education. Throughout this 5-day course, you will be introduced to teaching techniques to conduct meaningful knowledge development sessions, confined water training and open water training dives.
Once you have completed your PADI Assistant Instructor course, you will be able to start your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor program.

The PADI Assistant Instructor course takes PADI Divemaster training a step further by teaching these certified assistants how to introduce new knowledge and skills independently, or with minimal supervision, and learn to conduct additional PADI programs.
Becoming a PADI Assistant Instructor is a good option for you as a PADI Divemaster who want to gain additional knowledge and skills before taking your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), or if you must delay attending your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). As an experienced PADI Assistant Instructor you will enter your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) training already knowing how to teach and handle a class, which makes it easier for you to absorb more during the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program and smoothes the transition to functioning as a PADI Scuba Instructor in future.
If have a leadership-level certification through other certification organizations you may also qualify to take the PADI Assistant Instructor course. You may find it helpful to become familiar with the PADI System through the PADI Assistant Instructor course before going on to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. By taking this course, you will get to fine-tune and adapt their teaching skills to PADI programs, and become a PADI Member.
Some PADI Assistant Instructors may not become PADI Instructors for a variety of economical, educational and personal reasons. In this case, you still may work as dive professionals and hold key positions within the dive industry. You can provide many instructional and noninstructional services for dive centers and resorts, which allows PADI Scuba Instructors to concentrate on teaching.
The PADI Assistant Instructor course goals are to:
Further develop your skills as an instructional assistant.
Provide you with practical experience in teaching knowledge development portions of various PADI courses.
Provide you with practical experience in conducting skill development sessions of various PADI courses.
Provide you with practical experience in conducting open water training dives in courses such as the Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty course.
Provide you with practical experience in conducting other PADI programs.
Familiarize you with PADI Standards, administrative requirements and certification procedures used in conducting PADI courses.
Familiarize you with the structure of the dive industry and provide basic marketing, sales and risk management techniques.
Prepare you for your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) training.
In addition to the responsibilities and duties you already have as a PADI Divemaster, as a PADI Assistant Instructor you can:
Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
During confined water dives, present initial skills training under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
Teach and certify PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Divers under the direction of a PADI Instructor
Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
Teach the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialty course
Conduct PADI Discover Scuba Diving experiences in a pool or confined water
Conduct PADI Seal Team AquaMissions
Teach PADI Digital Underwater Photographer specialty courses under the direction of a PADI Instructor after earning the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor rating.

PADI Assistant Instructor course is divided into 4 components:
Confined Water training
Open Water training
Before you start your PADI Assistant Instructor course, we will help you fine-tune your diving knowledge, general diving skills and rescue skills. During the preassesment section of your PADI Assistant Instructor course, you will Complete several dive theory exams under our guidance (Physics, Physiology, Equipment, RDP and Skills & Environment).
Attend dive theory review class – if needed
Skills demonstration workshops – General skills and rescue skills
Attend a “how to use your PADI Instructor Manual” workshop
Participate in 10 PADI Instructor Development Course curriculum presentations and workshops by PADI IDC Staff Instructor and/or PADI Course Director.
Score 75 percent on the PADI Systems, Standards and Procedures Exam and have any missed questions reviewed until mastery is achieved. Retest candidates scoring less than 75 percent.
Present two knowledge development teaching presentations, scoring a minimum of 3.5 on at least one.
Confined Water training:
Perform all 20 dive skills in the Skill Evaluation, scoring a minimum of 68 total points, with no individual score below 3.
Participate in “Teaching in confined water” workshop.
Present two confined water teaching presentations, scoring a minimum of 3.4 on at least one.
Open Water training:
Complete the PADI Divemaster course – Diver Rescue assessment.
Participate in “Conducting skills in open water” workshop.
Present one integrated (two skills) open water teaching presentation, scoring a minimum of 3.4 on each skill.
Our PADI Assistant Instructor course in Perhentian Island, Malaysia is performance based developmental training – in the event that you do not meet the minimum required scores, we will keep coaching and guiding you until you can meet or even exceed the course requirements. Our goal is to make sure you have all the confidence to carry your responsibility as a PADI Assistant Instructor after the course.
Prerequisites – PADI Assistant Instructor course in Perhentian Island, Malaysia.
To start your PADI Assistant Instructor course, you must be:
Dive Leader certification — PADI Divemaster or leadership-level certification with a recognized recreational diver training organization* who is either: an instructor member in good standing, or a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of rescue diving certification; 60 logged dives; documented experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation.
18 years old
Medical clearance attesting to dive fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months.
Certified diver for six months.
EFR Primary and Secondary Care course completion (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.
If not a PADI Divemaster, complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.
Submit documentation of qualifying certifications for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level, as necessary.
